November Update
Now Playing: Workshop Report, Spelling Bee, New Workshop Announcement
Topic: Update
This is a picture of me (in black) with Wendy Northcross (in blue) CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce loving the loving cup! My team won over 17 local teams in the Literacy Council Spelling Bee at Coonamessett Inn in Falmouth, MA. It was a wonderful and well supported event for charity. I'll be there again next year, spelling my heart out! The October 29 Workshop, The Magic of Coaching was a fine success. We held it at the Daniel Webster Inn (warm fireplaces and thick with antiques). It was an exciting and interactive three hours, and I so regret I didn't take a photo for you to see. The next workshop will be at the Daniel Webster as well. Call 508-775-2059 or write thejoyofsuccess@comcast.net for tickets ($35 each) or reservations. Don't miss the upgrades to my website at www.thejoyofsuccess.net Next time I write, I'll share more about the upcoming workshop on January 14, 2006.

Relationships with Staff
Now Playing: Judith Orloff, M.D.
Topic: Boundaries
I took this from the web some time ago, and pass it on to you as a very valuable outline for transformation in your workplace. It's originally by Dr. Judith Orloff.

Ten Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress, and Fear Into Vibrance, Strength, and Love

"Our relationships at work are governed by a give and take of energy. Some coworkers make us more electric or at ease. Yet others suck the life right out of us. As a physician and energy specialist I want to verify that energy vampires roam the workplace sapping our exuberance. But most of us don’t know how to cope with vampires, so we mope around as unwitting casualties, enduring a preventable fatigue.

Here are some types of energy vampires to watch for at work and ways to deal with them.

Vampire #1: The Sob Sister

She’s the whining coworker with the “poor me” attitude who’s more interested in complaining than solutions.

How to Protect Yourself: Set clear boundaries. Limit the time you spend talking about her complaints. Sensitively say, “I’m sorry I can only talk for a few minutes today.” And go on with your work.

Vampire #2: The Drama Queen

This vampire has a flair for exaggerating small incidents into off-the-chart dramas which exhaust you.

How to Protect Yourself: A drama queen doesn’t get mileage out of equanimity. Stay calm. Take a few deep breaths. This will help you not get caught up in the histrionics.

Vampire #3:The Constant Talker or Joke Teller

A chronic motor mouth, he has no interest in your feelings; he’s only concerned with himself. You wait for an opening to get a word in edgewise but it never comes.

How to Protect Yourself: These people don’t respond to nonverbal cues. You must speak up and interrupt. Politely say, “I’m a quiet person, so please excuse me for not talking a long time.”—more constructive than expressing frustration.

Vampire #4. The Fixer Upper

She turns you into her therapist, desperate for you to fix her endless problems. At lunch, she’ll make a beeline to your desk, monopolizing your free time. Her neediness lures you in.

How to Protect Your Energy: Do not become the “rescuer.” Show empathy but resist offering solutions to avoid reinforcing this behavior.

Vampire #5: The Blamer

This vampire has a sneaky way of making you feel guilty or lacking for not getting things just right. She always has a negative comment to make.

How to Protect Yourself: Try this visualization. Around this person imagine yourself surrounded by a cocoon of white light, a protective covering. Tell yourself that you are safe and secure so you can’t be depleted.

Vampire #6: Go for the Jugular Fiend

This type is intentionally vindictive and/or verbally abusive. It’s hard to get these hurtful jabs out of your head.

How To Protect Yourself: Eliminate them from your life whenever possible. If this is your boss, try a visualization that puts you at a distance from him. If you can’t switch jobs, realize he’s a wounded person; don’t take his meanness personally.

Judith Orloff, MD, is a psychiatrist, energy specialist and practicing intuitive. This article comes from her new book Positive Energy: Ten Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress, and Fear Into Vibrance, Strength, and Love. She is also author of the two bestsellers: Guide to Intuitive Healing and Second Sight. Judith is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, has a private practice in Los Angeles."

Whaddya Got to Lose??
Now Playing: Your Requests
Topic: Workshops
Wanna do a workshop that's focused on what you asked for? Here's how: you reply with a description of what you want and need to be coached on, and I'll plan and deliver the workshops - several different ones actually, 3 hours long for $16.95 each. They'll be in a hotel here on Cape Cod for now, tho' there's no reason they can't travel (the fee will be a bit higher, of course!) You can barely go out to dinner or buy a shirt at Marshall's for that! I'll take as many requests as you have and generate 1 workshop per month. Hurry up and send in your coaching wants and needs!! Just email me at thejoyofsuccess@comcast.net.

Coaching
Now Playing: Major League Baseball
Coaching empowers people to succeed in all kinds of businesses and occupations. By success, I mean overcoming the known and the unknown obstacles in your path, in order to fulfill your dreams.

In the major leagues, the batting coach doesn't explain to Manny Ramirez or Jason Giambi which end of the bat to hold. The coach watches every batter closely and makes comments, frequently tiny, about the batter's whole presentation.

"Ted, if you point your left foot about 1/4" more toward second base, I think you'll get better loft."

Whether you are a beginner or you have been in business or practice for 25 years, the coaching is always in the details. The only difference is in which details!

post-Katrina
Now Playing: Be Prepared
Topic: A Lesson
It's the day after Katrina struck, but days and weeks before we know the total devastation she has wrought. Several news commentators have observed that the City of New Orleans has worried about whether the pumps would work and the levees would hold in the event of a catastrophic event such as this. Yet they apparently made no effort to do the necessary work. The Coast Guard, on the other hand, has lived up to its motto, "Semper Paratus" -- always prepared. They're doing yeoman's work in Katrina's wake, rescuing families from roofs left and right. I do realize that our businesses, whatever they may be, are not apt to be in as serious straits as the Gulf Coast, nor the rescue as dramatic as having the Coast Guard helicopter in. Still, it's not a bad idea to look around to see where we're not prepared, and then take the necessary action.

Labor Day Tips
Now Playing: Part One: August 25
Topic: Getting Organized 101
It's none too soon to begin getting organized for Autumn in your business or practice. Or, for that matter in your projects: writing or getting fit, or whatever you may be up to. (A coach can help with all of this!) 1. Make a list of "To Do's" today. Include resetting your appointment book, if you're changing any times or have taken on a new accountability. 2.Make whatever phone calls you may need to set your schedule for at least a month. 3. Check that your paperwork is current. This may mean variously: licenses, authorizations, recredentialling, whatever the state and your professional group may require. If you need CEU'S or CME'S schedule those now, too. 4. Check supplies of letterheads, brochures, business cards - all those things that you don't want to run out of the day before your first public appearance of the Fall. 5. Be sure to schedule time for yourself!! I use highlighters to mark my book (I know, so not techie, but right at hand - yellow for clients, blue for other appointments (like docs and meetings) and pink for me! This is the very first thing I do to set up my book each month. Make yourself a priority, too! Have fun! More soon. Please add comments especially on what I've left out so far! Thanks. Also go to and enjoy my coaching website and take a look at
